Desde protegerse de rayos o enfermedades, a favorecer la fertilidad y la virilidad, e incluso la capacidad de volver a uno invisible. Muchas han sido las cualidades mágicas que se le han atribuido al muérdago, pero bien es cierto que sus propiedades medicinales son numerosas. Entre otras cosas, se usa en terapias que disminuyen los daños ocasionados por la quimioterapia o la radioterapia: devuelve el apetito, regula el sueño, tonifica el metabolismo, estimula el sistema inmunitario y equilibra la temperatura corporal.

¿Sabíais que el muérdago es una planta semiparásita? Se aprovecha de otros árboles (sobre todo de robles y encinas), se adhiere a ellos y se alimenta de su agua y sus nutrientes. Para que os hagáis una idea, existen unas 1300 especies de muérdago en todo el mundo. Eso sí, mejor no os comáis sus bayas. En grandes cantidades pueden resultar tóxicas.

Just to give you an idea, there are approximately 1.300 different species of mistletoe all over the world. But do not it the berries, they are toxic for people in large quantities.
Entre otras cosas, los celtas consideraban al muérdago como una planta mágica ya que, por ejemplo, permanecía verde todo el año, y sus raíces nunca tocaban el suelo. Otra de las ''cualidades'' que se le han atribuido es la de mantener alejados a los malos espíritus, de ahí que se recomiende colgarla en la entrada de casa, o lo más cerca de ella.
Among other things, Celts considered mistletoe to be a magic plant as, for instance, it remained green thtroughout the whole year, and its roots never touched the ground. Other quality was that of keeping spirits away, that is why is advisable to hang it on the entryway, or the closest to it.

Pero, ¿por qué besarse bajo una rama de muérdago? Para llegar a este punto, debemos remontarnos a la Antigua Grecia. Los griegos creían que el muérdago daba vida y fertilidad, y por eso era usado en ceremonias como el matrimonio. También era una planta que simbolizaba la paz y fomentaba las reconciliaciones. Establecieron que, a la hora de hacer las paces, éstas se harían con un beso y bajo una rama de muérdago.
But, why kissing under the mistletoe? Before reaching to this point, we should travel to the Ancient Greece. Greeks believed that mistletoe was a life giver and favored fertility, that is why it was used in ceremonies such as weddings. It was also a plant that symbolized peace and encouraged reconciliations. They decided that two people had to reconcile with a kiss and under the mistletoe.

Ya en el siglo XVIII, los ingleses, inspirados por las antiguas creencias griegas, instauraron poco a poco un ritual en torno a esta planta. Cuenta la leyenda que una chica joven se situaría bajo una rama de muérdago adornado con preciosos lazos y que ésta no podría rechazar ningún beso. Dicho beso derivaría o bien en un profundo romance o en una amistad para toda la vida. Por cada beso que se diera bajo esa rama, una baya debía de ser arrancada. Cuando todas las bayas se hubieran arrancado, ya no se podrían dar más besos bajo esa rama.
The British, inspired by the ancient Greek beliefs, created in the 18th century a ritual with the mistletoe as the protagonist. According to the legend, a young girl was supposed to be standing under a mistletoe, beautifully decorated with pretty ribbons. She could not reject any kiss, and the man who kissed her will become either her lover or an ever lasting friendship. For every kiss under the mistletoe, one of its berries had to be removed. When all the berries had been removed, no more kisses could be given under that mistletoe.

¿Por qué basarse bajo el muérdago en Navidad? Al ser una planta perenne y que simbolizaba paz y reconciliación, se usaba en las casas durante todo el año. Es probable que de ahí surja la costumbre de besarse o abrazarse al llegar a casa. Con la evolución de las fiestas navideñas, el muérdago se convirtió en un elemento decorativo más. La magia de estas fechas hicieron el resto. En España no es una tradición muy popular, y no es de extrañar. Al fin y al cabo, las leyendas que giran en torno el muérdago son paganas, y vivimos en un país en el que predomina el cristianismo.
Why kissing under the mistletoe on Christmas? Being an evergreen plant which symbolized peace and reconciliation, it was used inside the house during the whole year. That could be the reason that we kiss and hug the people inside a house when we come in. Due to the evolution of the Christmas festivities, the mistletoe turned into a decorative element. The magic of Christmas did the rest. Here in Spain it is not a very popular tradition, but it makes senses as the legends surrounding the mistletoe are merely pagan, andwe live in a quite Christian country.
